What is Brainspotting (BSP)?

Pause. Breathe. Hope. Heal.

Dear Reader! To make life easier for you, I wanted to give you this information in a couple different formats. You can either read this blog post, or click the link below to download the podcast and listen to the episode on the go.

Brainspotting, or (BSP) is a type of therapy developed by Dr. David Grand which uses different eye positions or “brainspots” to help clients process trauma or distressing emotions. In Brainspotting, David Grand stated that, “where you look affects how you feel”. The idea here is that unresolved trauma in the subcortical brain can be processed by gazing at certain spots in your visual field.

To find the Brainspots which hold the traumatic experiences, the therapist moves a pointer across the client’s field of vision while watching for any specific responses. Then, the client can listen to a bilateral stimulation track while processing the activating memory or body sensation.

Brainspotting can help people expand their window of tolerance and move from a place of Hyperarousal or a Sympathetic state of:

  • Fight or flight
  • Anxiety
  • Panic
  • Overwhelm
  • Anger
  • Hypervigilance etc.

Likewise, it can help people move from a place of Hypoarousal or a Dorsal Vagal state of:

  • Freeze
  • Immobilization
  • Low energy
  • Depression
  • Numbness
  • Shut down
  • Collapse
  • Hopelessness
  • Despair
  • Dissociation
  • Disconnection

Brainspotting, or (BSP) therapy can be used for things like:

  • Attachment trauma
  • PTSD
  • Betrayal trauma
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Grief and loss
  • Limiting beliefs
  • Negative self-assessment
  • Expanding positive cognitions
  • Performance enhancement etc.
